Hi there! Today I am really excited to share with you a new tutorial. This would be a great idea for Christmas! You probably know more than a few people who own tablets that would enjoy a quilted case! The tutorial is long, but don’t be intimidated, it’s not that hard! I promise!
My husband recently bought a new tablet and asked me to make a protective case for him. I was kind of stumped at first on how to make him a case that was quilted yet manly at the same time. My husband is an Engineer and I thought using triangles to make his case would make a cool design that he would like. I got my inspiration from here. 
First you need to calculate how big your tablet is. Mine is measuring approximately 7″ x 11″
Here is the formula for calculating how big you need your top:
Length: 2(Length of tablet) + 2.5″
Width: Width of tablet + 2.5″
**You may want to add another inch or two to compensate for quilting. This depends on how heavily you quilt your case. I did very minimal quilting on this specific case.
So mine looked like this:
Length: 2(7) + 2.5 = 16.5″
Width: 11 + 2.5 = 13.5″
Choose the fabrics you want to use. Fat quarters work perfectly for this project:
Now we are going to cut strips of fabric that measure 4″ wide by the width of your fabric:
Here is where it can get a little tricky. You are going to cut equilateral triangles. So you need to use the 60 degree marking on your ruler. Line up the 60 degree line with the top of your fabric and cut:
That little piece is waste:
Now you will line up the 60 degree line at the bottom and cut:
So here you have an equilateral triangle. To make this go faster stack up 4 pieces of fabric at a time and then make your cuts.
Here are all my triangles:
Now you want to line up your triangles on a design wall or on the table until you get them how you want them. I actually had to add a whole other row to the bottom of my triangles so I eded up having 5 rows of 8 triangles.
Now you are going to sew your rows of triangles:
Place your triangles right sides together and stitch a 1/4″ seam like this:
Press, and then continue to sew your triangles together until your row is completed. I happened to need 8 triangles per row.
Now you are going to sew your rows together:
Place two rows together and pin where your triangles should meet up and then sew a 1/4 seam all the way down:
Press, and then repeat until all of your rows are done:
Before you cut off your edges, make sure your top is the size you need.
Now you need to trim your edges so they are straight. You will be cutting off half triangles to do this: 
Now you need to make your quilt “sandwich”
You will need a back piece that measures a couple inches bigger than your top on all sides.
You will cut your batting the same size as your backing.
Layer them like this:
To ensure your pieces don’t move when you quilt them just put in a few safety pins to attach all of your layers:
Now it’s time to quilt. This is where you can use your imagination. Since this is for my husband and I wanted it to look as “manly” as possible I only stitched in the ditch in these areas:

Now you want to trim off all of your extra batting and backing.
You will then fold your piece in half and sew a 1/4″ seam on one the side:
I added a zig-zag stitch to the right of my seam to prevent fraying:
After you do this, just put your tablet inside to make sure if fits snugly. If you need to do a larger seam to make it more snug, that’s completely fine.
You then want to sew one of your sides shut using a 1/4″ seam:
Turn right side out and put your tablet inside to determine where you want to hem your top opening:
Turn your case inside out and fold over your hem line. Pin if desired and stitch a 1/2″ hem line all the way around your case.
I ended up doing another hem line so I had two stitch lines:
Now you can be done here, or you can add a strap for extra security. My case was super snug and probably didn’t even need a strap, but I did one anyways:
You will need a strip of fabric 10″ x 3 ” fold in half right sides together and sew a 1/4″ seam all the way down. Turn right side out and press:
Add a button hole. (Refer to your sewing machine’s user manual for instructions)
Now you need to attach your strap to the back side on the inside of your case:
Now figure out where you need to sew your button on and hand stitch your button to the front of your case:
Now you are done!
See, it wasn’t really too bad-just a ton of pictures! The worst part of it all was cutting out those darn triangles! I don’t know why, but it took me a while to get the hang of cutting them out. Other than that, it wasn’t too bad to put together.
The real test of how I did was my husband’s opinion. This was for him, after all. Turns out he likes it and even though it’s “quilted” it still looks manly! 🙂
